If They Search on Their Smartphones, Will They Find You?
A recent poll by Google conducted in partnership with Ipsos MediaCT and Purchased found that 80% of US adults who conducted searches a few times per week on their smartphones did so to find local information. The majority of respondents searched for business hours, local address, directions and product availability.
Interestingly, smartphone searchers were slightly more likely to use their phones to look for local information at home than when they were on the go. Most of the searchers used smartphones everywhere and computers and tablets were used less than smartphones in every location other than home. This means that the percentage of consumers who search via their smartphone versus their PC is growing. According to Google, sales from mobile web and social networks are estimated to grow 93% percent per year within the next three years.
If you do not have a mobile-web app for your company, how will these prospects find your business when searching on their smartphones? Unfortunately, they may find your website, however it will appear fragmented on their smartphone. In terms of usability, these searchers will find it extremely difficult to navigate and will abandon your site to jump onto one that has been configured for a mobile phone.
Hard to picture? Close your eyes and envision the menu of your favorite restaurant; consider its creative design, images and the delicious descriptions of each meal option. Now, visualize yourself crumpling up the shiny main menu page into an object the size of a deck of cards. Can you still see all of the menu choices, descriptions and photography? Can you easily ascertain an appetizer versus a main course? Probably not; the same is true for your website’s appearance on a smartphone if a responsive or mobile design was not developed in concert with it.
Furthermore, a recent eMarketer article presents smartphone user penetration worldwide from 2012 until 2018. Worldwide smartphone usage is projected to grow 25% this year. “By 2015, we project that 15 countries worldwide will have seen more than half their populations adopt smartphones,” said Monica Peart, senior forecasting analyst at eMarketer. “… 500 million people in these countries who will be using smart devices by the end of next year...” If you own or manage a global or multinational company, the question is not whether or not you need a responsive design or mobile version of your website, but instead, how quickly can it be developed.
