Google's Product Review Update- What You Need to Know

If product reviews are part of your content marketing or SEO strategy, we’ve got news for you; Google’s raising the bar- again.

As part of Google’s mission to deliver the most relevant and reliable information available, they’ve added affiliate-style blogs and product review websites to their naughty list.

Ok, Google probably doesn’t have a naughty list. And the latest series of updates focused on product review pages aren’t “punishing” publishers of those annoying “Best of” articles. It’s just Google's way of demanding legitimate, quality reviews from people who actually used or tested the product.

We’ve all turned to Google to research products before we buy them. In fact, according to Google, more than 50% of shoppers surveyed say they use Google to research a purchase they plan to make online1.

More than 50% of shoppers surveyed say they use Google to research a purchase they plan to make online.

To meet the needs of its users, Google is rewarding review pages with actual recommendations based on experience with the product, not just a comparison chart of products and buttons like “See Price on Amazon.”

What You Need to Know About Google's Product Review Update

If you regularly publish review content on your blog or website, Google cited two ways to add trust, authority, and legitimacy to your review:

  1. Provide evidence such as visuals, audio, or other links of your own experience with the product, to support your expertise and reinforce the authenticity of your review.
  2. Include links to multiple sellers to give the reader the option to purchase from their merchant of choice.

The second recommendation is most notable. A few bloggers have been mentioned a noticeable drop in rankings for their articles that include only one link to a product cited in their article. If you have a similar experience, you may want to add links to additional sources and see if you climb back up.

In the meantime, keep writing those reviews! They are still a great way to get visibility as an authority and influencer in your space.
