Google Quality Algorithm Update

The quality update proves once again that small business owners need to stay up-to-date on Google’s ever-changing algorithm to maintain their rankings and traffic.

Last month, webmasters were rushing to comply with Google’s mobile search update to avoid what was anticipated to be a detrimental threat to their rankings. While the fallout from that update was less impactful than initially feared, Google’s latest “phantom” update has changed the way its algorithm processes quality signals and has caused some sites to see a significant drop in their organic traffic. Unlike previous updates, the quality update did not target any specific sites. Rather, it was a general update to their overall ranking algorithm.

Google uses hundreds of factors to determine the quality of a particular site, and updates such as this prove that they frequently alter the weight of certain factors with little or no notice to the public.

What Sites Were Hit?

The sites that were most impacted by the quality update are high volume generic content sites, such as HubPages, which is a group of more than 870,000 mini blogs that cover topics ranging from “The Art of Being an Exceptional Web Designer” to “How Do Fireflies Glow (and Why)?”

The fact that this type of site was most impacted by this update suggests that Google is weighing high quality, relevant, and fresh content more heavily than other factors in its search algorithm.

Should Small Businesses Worry?

While this latest update is unlikely to impact many small business websites, it demonstrates the importance of keeping a close watch on the changes Google roles out on a continual basis. Without paying close attention the factors that could affect your rankings, you could see your site’s traffic drop significantly, which could have a detrimental impact on your business’s bottom line.
